Driven by a passion as a kid to “make movies” Michael has been blessed with a robust video production journey taking him to 6 continents and dozens of states. His hands-on experience continues to this day. Michael has been a production company partner in Kansas City for over 35 years. His resume includes national TV spots, national series content for PBS, Indy movie production, documentaries and corporate marketing and communications. He’s a big believer in LUCK, and the more you DO, and the harder you WORK, the luckier you will be! Michael is also a big believer in passing on knowledge and experience to help nurture the next generation of producers and digital filmmakers. He will share short stories from some long shoots and provide advice on how to make a living in the production industry!

Rachel DeSchepper, Lead Content Strategist, Andrews McMeel Universal
Rachel DeSchepper is the Lead Strategist at Andrews McMeel Universal. She started her career in print magazines, writing direct-to-layout and working months in advance to meet print deadlines. That evolved to her first digital job, where she essentially copy/pasted print stories onto this thing called the Internet. Sixteen years later, she’s still creating content that complements print (comics, puzzles)—but today, what’s considered “content” has evolved into apps, games, video, audio, social media, newsletters, and much more. Learn about her career as a Content Strategist and how content strategy is an important activity for any digital publication.

Charlie O’Shields, Creative Director at Venn49 Creative Lab
Charlie has been a Creative Director for over 30 years working with large and small brands, inventing clever ideas and helping them come to life in innovative ways across all sorts of mediums including, but not limited to: websites, online games, movies, animation, and retail products. He’s currently the Executive Creative Director at Venn49 Creative Lab focusing on packaging and point-of-sale design. On the side, he’s also the creator of a watercolor website called Doodlewash®, founder of World Watercolor Month in July, and author of several Sketching Stuff™ books. Mostly, he’s just a big kid at heart who believes that a creative career can be more than simply a day job. It’s really just an exciting way to live your entire life!

Stacey’s experience is eclectic and diverse, ranging from small retail brands to agencies and large corporations. With an equally expansive skillset, Stacey creates via graphic design, video direction, animation, and even sewing (ask her about her quilted bags). Whatever the job, she takes pride in tackling whatever comes next — and doing it with passion. Right now, you can find her creating scroll-stopping social media posts and captivating animations for Dairy Farmers of America and its group of consumer brands.

Sailor Usher, AR/VR Coordinator, UMKC’s AVR Studio
As the AR/VR Coordinator at the University of Missouri-Kansas City's (UMKC) AVR Studio, Sailor Usher plays a key role in guiding the next generation of immersive technology professionals. With a background in computer science and experience as a Senior XR Ambassador, Usher is well-positioned to help students explore career opportunities in Augmented and Virtual Reality. Sailor will cover the diverse career paths available in the field, from development and design to project management. He will discss the essential skills needed to succeed, such as 3D modeling, programming in common engines like Unity and Unreal, and the importance of user experience (UX) design for creating intuitive and engaging virtual environments. Drawing on his experience at UMKC's state-of-the-art facility, Usher will provide valuable insights into the practical applications of AR/VR across various industries, including healthcare, education, and entertainment. Caroline Muth, Multimedia Producer and Radio Producer at TICO Productions | TICO Sports
Step behind the mic and into the action with a behind-the-scenes look at a career in sports media and broadcasting! In this session, Caroline Muth will share her journey from interning as a senior in college - producing University of Kansas football and basketball games - to building a full-time career as a sports radio broadcaster and multimedia producer. Over the past three years, she has had the incredible opportunity to broadcast for some of the biggest names in sports, including the Kansas City Chiefs, Royals, and Current. (Ask her about her travels to the past two Super Bowls, LVIII and LIX!) Her work and experience have helped expand TICO's radio network with the addition of three new franchises, and she now supervises broadcasts for over 10 different teams, managing everything from live game coverage to behind-the-scenes coordination. On the client side at TICO Productions, she puts her editing skills to work creating multimedia content for organizations such as Kansas City Sports Commission, WIN for KC and JReid Indeed, the foundation of NFL safety Justin Reid.

Having contributed to feature films, hit TV series, and AAA video game projects, they know what it takes to succeed in today’s fast-evolving creative industries. This breakout session will cover how to break into animation, filmmaking, and gaming, what skills and mindsets studios are really looking for, and how to craft a portfolio and personal brand that stands out. In this 45-minute session, you’ll get a friendly, behind-the-scenes look at what it means to work in the world of data visualization. We’ll talk about the kinds of jobs you might find—like data architect, database administrator, information designer, and data scientists—along with the skills companies outline in job descriptions. I’ll also share a little about why this field is valuable, what types of work there are, and walk through real job-description language so you can see how roles are pitched. We hope to show you can start building toward this field now (yes — even in high school). No heavy jargon, just a straightforward look at a creative tech path you may not have thought about.

Tom Gray is the co-creator and CEO of Make48, a 48-hour competition and televised documentary series. Originally from New Zealand, he has worked with inventors and entrepreneurs globally in the manufacturing industry. As CEO, he guides the company's national and international growth and manages partnerships with global brands. Gray is passionate about connecting major brands with STEM/STEAM content and promoting innovation. His extensive network of relationships with nonprofits, educational institutions, and corporations has been instrumental in Make48's rapid expansion.
In his breakout session, Tom will share what it takes to be a producer, from pitching to networks to building a loyal audience. He will discuss how a producer must combine preparation, strategic thinking, and adaptability to create content that keeps millions of viewers engaged.

I started out as a kid fascinated with cameras and art, and that passion grew into a career that’s taken me from working for free, to freelancing, to leading video projects at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Along the way, I learned how creativity and technology together can open doors. In this talk, I’ll share how students can start building real skills now, using video, design, and digital storytelling to turn their own passions into meaningful careers in a world that needs more authentic creative voices.

Austin Reed
Associate Vice President, Director Creative Media Studio - HNTBAustin Reed brings over two decades of expertise in visualization and currently leads the Creative Media Studio at HNTB, an infrastructure solutions firm. This breakout session will examine the evolution from mastering various 3D visualization and real-time technology software—such as 3ds Max, Blender, Maya, Unreal Engine, and Unity—to attaining professional competence within the industry. The discussion will offer concrete examples of 3D art outputs typically produced by visualization teams for clients, including photo matches, architectural renderings, VR walkthroughs, and immersive interactive presentations. We will analyze the purpose and value of each deliverable and discuss how these tools can be leveraged to craft visually engaging narratives that advance project objectives and strengthen communication through storytelling. Attendees will gain actionable strategies for choosing appropriate visualization outputs and effectively conveying project stories to clients.

Joe Macklin (Jo Blaq), Producer, Writer, Engineer at BMG Music Publishing
Joe is regarded as one of the music industry’s most innovative music producers. He has quickly become a light of his own in the music industry. Known as a rare “100 percenter” in his industry, he is a sought-after songwriter, vocalist, musician and producer. Jo has worked with many of the mainstream artists of our time. In 2015, he was nominated for a “Best Pop Vocal” Grammy for his vocal production work on Ariana Grande’s My Everything Album. Jo was again nominated for two Grammys in 2016 for the vocal production on Tim Bowman’s Listen album and Jill Scott’s Woman album.
Over his genre-spanning career, Jo has worked with artists such as: Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Anita Baker, Justin Bieber, Cruz Beckum, Mario, Big Sean, B5, Chris Brown, 98 Degrees, Jasmine V, Next, Kendrick Lamar, B. Smyth, Evan Ross, Jordin Sparks, Shaunice, and more.
Joe will discuss his own path to a rewarding career in audio engineering and music production and share information about jobs in that industry that might be interesting to you. He’ll provide advice on what you can do to prepare for a career in that industry.

Olivia's skillset spans the full spectrum of multimedia and digital content creation. From working on film sets and shooting behind-the-scenes photography to capturing eye-catching magazine covers and crafting engaging multimedia for B2B marketing campaigns, her wide range of experience has led to many unique opportunities. All of Olivia's work is centered on a passion for storytelling and bringing a vision to reality. She is currently the multimedia director at Avant Food Media, a B2B media company dedicated to covering the baking industry.

Christina is a Vice President of Marketing and Client CMO at Crux, and formerly the President of Ovations Digital. She is a 2022-23 member of the Forbes Communications Council and a published author on Forbes. Her insights on social media strategy have also appeared in Inc.com, People Maven Magazine, National Jewelry, Capterra Magazine, and she has appeared on the Chris Voss podcast.
Christina has extensive expertise in developing and managing social media for clients of all sizes and in all industries. She will discuss what it takes to be a successful social media content developer and what that profession looks like on a day-to-day basis.

Simon has diverse experience across many areas including stints in research science, as an executive at F100-500 tech companies, and as a co-founder of many startups and organizations including the Social Media Club of Kansas and Guildit, the Network for the Arts. This session is about AI as a foundation for many careers from digital media to technology. We will explore AI not just as a tool for creatives but also how it will underpin every aspect of business, and every type of business, and how skills in AI will help get ahead of the future.

Claire Bradshaw is a Kansas City television reporter that focuses on covering hyper-local news and issues. In her seven years in TV news, Claire has worked various newsroom roles from reporter, producer and anchor – sometimes all at once. In this session, she will discuss the steps she took to get her “dream job” while also highlighting the importance of local news coverage and how rewarding it can be for both viewers and the journalist. Get insight to a day in the life of a local news journalist who rises before the sun to keep people informed.

Kyle Hamrick, Freelance Motion Designer
Kyle Hamrick is an Emmy-winning multimedia creator & instructor who loves putting ideas into motion and helping others do the same. Motion graphics is a diverse field incorporating 2D/3D design, animation & filmmaking skills to create content for advertising, apps, TV & film title sequences, live events, online videos and more. We'll talk about opportunities in this ever-growing field and how to make your way into this fun and rewarding career.

A deli bar lunch will be served between 12:15 and 1:00 p.m. Two buffet lines will be set up in the halls just outside of the Town Square Room. Most students will take their lunch to the tables in the Town Square Booth. The two designated schools using the overflow space (J.C. Harmon & Olathe Northwest) will take their lunches to the Brookside Room, where tables are available. Drinks will be on the side bar in the Town Square Room.
College/Career Fair: 12:30 - 2:00
Take advantage of this rare opportunity to talk directly with representatives of 14 regional programs that want to help you pursue your career goals in digital media. Career booths will be available at 12:30 and will remain in place until 2:00 p.m. Some students may wish to visit career booths first and take their lunch after the line gets shorter. Five career booths will be set up in the Lobby area. The remaining booths will be set up in the Kansas City and Troost Rooms.

Jim Lane, Dean of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences
JCCC offers an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Animation-Entertainment and Game Art Design. This program provides instruction for creating animation, 3D modeling, and special effects for applications such as animated shorts, movies, and games. The program covers fundamental drawing skills, design concepts, and the development of entertainment media assets.
Web Development and Digital Media, AAS
This two-year associate degree program provides students with the skills and knowledge they need to develop and maintain websites and other digital media products. The program covers a wide range of topics, including web design, development, and programming; digital media production; and social media marketing. Students will also gain hands-on experience in JCCC's state-of-the-art computer and production labs.
Digital Media Certificate
This 31-credit hour certificate program is designed to provide students with the foundational knowledge and skills they need to create digital media content. The program covers a wide range of topics, including graphic design, animation, web scripting, and digital marketing. Students will also gain hands-on experience in JCCC's state-of-the-art computer and production labs.
Johnson County Community College (JCCC) offers a variety of communications programs, including:
Communication Studies (COMS): This program provides students with a foundation in the principles of effective communication. Students will learn about interpersonal communication, public speaking, organizational communication, and intercultural communication.
Journalism & Media Communications (JOUR): This program prepares students for careers in journalism, public relations, advertising, and other media-related fields. Students will learn how to write, report, and edit news; produce multimedia content; and create effective public relations campaigns.

The Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI) offers several degree programs related to digital media, web design, and marketing. These programs provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in the creative industries.
Graphic Design
The Graphic Design program at KCAI is a four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) program that teaches students how to use their creativity and problem-solving skills to create effective visual communication. Students learn about typography, layout, branding, and other design principles. They also gain experience in a variety of design mediums, including print, web, and motion graphics.
Digital Media
The Digital Media program at KCAI is a four-year BFA program that teaches students how to create and distribute content for digital platforms. Students learn about web design, animation, video editing, and other digital media technologies. They also gain experience in project management, marketing, and social media.
Web Design and Development
The Web Design and Development program at KCAI is a four-year BFA program that teaches students how to design, develop, and maintain websites. Students learn about HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and other web development technologies. They also gain experience in user experience design, user interface design, and responsive design.
Marketing
The Marketing program at KCAI is a four-year BFA program that teaches students how to create and execute effective marketing campaigns. Students learn about market research, consumer behavior, and marketing strategy. They also gain experience in advertising, public relations, and social media marketing. Interdisciplinary In addition to these traditional degree programs, KCAI also offers a variety of interdisciplinary programs that combine digital media, web design, and marketing with other areas of study, such as art history, creative writing, and entrepreneurship.
Career Outlook
Graduates of KCAI's digital media, web design, and marketing programs find employment in a variety of industries, including advertising, design, education, entertainment, and technology. They may work as web designers, graphic designers, marketing professionals, or digital media specialists.
The job outlook for these professions is strong. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of web designers is projected to grow by 8% from 2020 to 2030, while employment of graphic designers is projected to grow by 3%. Employment of marketing and public relations specialists is also projected to grow by 6% from 2020 to 2030.

Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Digital Media This degree program is designed to prepare students for careers in digital media, including web design, interactive media, and graphic design. Students will learn the latest industry software and techniques, as well as how to create and manage digital content.
Web Development Certificate This certificate program is designed to teach students the skills they need to develop websites. Students will learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as how to use industry-standard software tools.
Digital Marketing Certificate This certificate program is designed to teach students the skills they need to succeed in digital marketing. Students will learn about search engine optimization (SEO), social media marketing, and email marketing.
Graphic Design Certificate This certificate program is designed to teach students the skills they need to succeed in graphic design. Students will learn about typography, layout, and color theory.
KCKCC also offers a variety of individual courses in digital media, web design, and marketing. These courses can be taken for credit or for non-credit.
In addition to its academic programs, KCKCC also offers a variety of resources for students interested in digital media, web design, and marketing. These resources include a student-run digital media club, a career center, and a mentoring program.

The A.Q. Miller School of Media and Communication at Kansas State University offers cutting-edge digital media degree programs designed for students eager to excel in media, technology, and communications careers. Degree Options
Bachelor of Science in Digital Innovation in Media (DIGIN): This program provides training in media production, digital branding, entrepreneurship, and computer programming. Students earn a bachelor’s degree, a minor in entrepreneurship and innovation, and certificates in computer science and digital engagement, all in one four-year program.
Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science in Mass Communications: Students can specialize in digital innovations, news and sports media, or advertising/public relations. Courses combine media theory with practical experience through student-run broadcast outlets and media labs.
Graduate Programs: The school offers a Master of Science in Mass Communications, with a focus on digital media analytics, strategic communication, and campaign development. Students complete a capstone practicum instead of a thesis.
